WAINWRIGHT BAPTIST CHURCH. Address – W. Avis and S. West Streets. In 1868, Rev. Nathan Brackett of the Freedmen’s Bureau donated land to a small group of freed slaves for their newly-organized church, the Colored Free Will Baptist Church of Charles Town. Rev. Chester C. Wainwright was its pastor from 1874 until his death in 1902. The church was, posthumously, renamed Wainwright Baptist Church. It is the oldest black Baptist church in Jefferson County.
