11013.HR – This photo from July 31, 1956 shows third from left, Sylvia Rideoutt Bishop, the first African American female thoroughbred racing trainer in the United States pictured at Charles Town Race track. She is flanked by her sister, Irma Rideoutt Berry and mother Bertha Snowden Rideoutt on her right and her husband John Bishop and John E. Berry, her brother-in-law, on her left. Ms. Bishop’s accomplishment came a long way from the first Charles Town Colored Horse Show in 1917.
