Marching bands have been popular in high school, junior high schools and colleges for many years. John Philip Sousa is the best known name in American music. At the college level, some musicians base their choice of schools on both academics and the quality of the marching band. John Philip Sousa earned the name of “march king” because he composed so many marches.
