Harpers Ferry Park’s Black History Month Program

In conjunction with Black History Month, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is pleased to announce its 2014 Black History Month program. Throughout February, a special exhibit, The United States Colored Troops & The Spirit of Freedom, will focus on the African American troops who served during the American Civil War.

This special exhibit will host an open house on Sunday, February 2, 2014, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, on the second floor of the John Brown Museum on Shenandoah Street in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Come learn about the more than 200,000 soldiers of the U.S. Colored Troops who served from 1861 to 1865. Find out also about African Americans from Jefferson County and Berkeley County who served in the military, including West Virginia’s Martin Delany, the only black officer to receive the rank of major during the Civil War.
