In the background on the right is the building which housed John Smith’s Tavern in Charles Town, WV. Smith’s Tavern was a prominent African American tavern at that time, located on South West Street which is in the southwest section of Charles Town. Both were on the corner of Avis Street and South West Street in Charles Town.

04019.CH – ST. PHILIP’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH — Because they needed a place to worship after the Civil War ended, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church was originated by Zion Episcopal Church to that end. Built in 1887, the church provided the African-Americans a place in which to worship. Located on Lawrence Street in Charles Town, worship services have continuously been held in this edifice. 04023.CH – Pictured is the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Choir. The date is unknown. The location is probably the church, but that was not specified on the photo. The Mt. Zion United Methodist Church was founded in 1867 and the church is still active today. In fact, of the 24 churches which were founded between 1848 and 1979 there are 8 churches which are no longer active today.

George Rutherford, the Jefferson County President of the NAACP is on the right. A plaque was presented to Janet.
