Often kids would ride more than one person on a bike, and while that was not the safest way to travel it was very common.

The photo was taken during summer vacation in the 1940’s at 834 Harewood Avenue in Charles Town, WV. James Alvin Tolbert would go on to graduate from Page Jackson High School in the class of 1950 after which he attended and graduated from college. Later he would be appointed to the WV Human Rights Commission Task Force. He also became the head of the Jefferson County NAACP and at the state level. In addition, he earned the position of Thirty-third Degree Prince Hall Masons.

Two precious young ladies are pictured here on South Lawrence Street in Charles Town, WV. The date is unknown but it appears to be the late 1940’s. St. Philips Church is in the background. St. Philip’s is an Episcopal Church in Charles Town. It is also a proochial and industrial school which was begun in 1900 by Rev. Deaver and continued until the years of the depression. Cost of attendance ranged from 25 cents to 45 cents per week.
